'In Celebration of Women'

ActOne is delighted to host a fundraising event for the Women on Acton on 10th March.

The Women of Acton group, which campaigns for the safety of women and girls in the area, has organised an evening of talks, music and readings to raise awareness of the issue. The event is entitled ‘In Celebration of Women’.

Locally based actor, Emilia Fox will give a reading and there will be talks by activist, campaigner and founder-member of Southall Black Sisters, Pragna Patel as well as writer, journalist and activist, Joan Smith.

19-year-old Acton based musician, Gretel Hȁnly and Italian singer-songwriter, living in Acton, Claudia Tarantino, will perform.

Women of Acton are a small group of local women who came together in Spring 2021, to raise consciousness about the dangers and fears that women and girls face in our area. We feel that the issues of Women being Safe cannot be ignored. The COVID-19 pandemic has intensified violence against women, as documented by the recent report by UN Women, and women’s safety is of heightened public concern following high profile murders. A current borough wide survey, ‘give my view’ by Safer Ealing Partnership has had over 3,000 responses so far.

"Reducing the prevalence and severity of violence against women is possible. Addressing the causes of violence is possible. Violence against women is preventable. It is time for increased investment to adapt and scale up evidence-based interventions. Policymakers, practitioners, researchers, and everyone in society have a crucial part to play to stop this pandemic..." The Lancet
